There are two main kinds of infections that cause the flu. These are characterized as viral and bacterial. While the virus and the bacterium are considered living beings, it was the virus which actually caused scientists to change their definition of life.

All organisms, other than the virus, reproduce using fully intact cells that mystically double their own content and then split into two identical cells; or mystically mix the genetic material of two non-identical cells ( male and female ) into one cell, which then begins doubling its content.

Viruses are quite different, because they do not reproduce they replicate . What this means is that they inject their genetic material through the cell membrane of a host cell – a bacterium, a plant, an animal, or a human being. This material navigates through the host cell and finds the main genetic replication factory inside the host cell. The replication area is supposed to be used only for the repair and maintenance and reproduction of the host cell itself.

The virus hacks its way into this system, and inserts its own programs, which call for the replication factory to start making innumerable small pieces of the virus. These small pieces then make the journey back out of the cell to the cell membrane, and begin to put themselves together until new, complete viruses are created. These go through a short period of time, where they run internal programs to make sure everything is networked and functional (scientists call this maturation of the virus). Once they get the all systems OK , they are then free to attach to another cell membrane, inject their programming, and continue to make thousands of new viruses. Until the immune system objects, they live happy, replicating lives.

Bacteria also gain access to the host cells, but instead of gaining access to the host cells replication factories, they attach to the cell membrane and create a channel through which they can usurp the cell s nutritional reserves to replicate themselves. They basically feed off the body, competing for nutrients, and excreting waste products into the body. These waste products are often quite toxic to the host. In the case of the flu caused by bacteria, it is commonly these toxins which produce the nasty symptoms we associate with the flu .

Knowing how a virus or bacterium penetrates the cell membrane and begins using the host cell s equipment and supplies to replicate itself gives us an opportunity for determining a strategy to prevent this from happening.

Many of my medical colleagues regard homeopathic therapies as useless because they are lacking in substance. Homeopathics are preparations of substance, which undergo successive dilutions, until there are no molecules of substance left. What they retain is the memory of the substance. This memory is the cause of great dispute, as was the concept of gravity at one time, or the concept of relativity more recently.

Concerning memory, many experiments have shown memory to be a powerful, real entity. In the late 1980 s, the world-respected scientific magazine Nature published research showing that specific homeopathic administration produced statistically significant immune response, as measured by T-cell counts. The medical uproar which resulted was deafening. The researchers who had succeeded in this demonstration of immune response to homeopathic therapy were forced to repeat their demonstration many times, under the scrutiny of a fraud-squad, who interfered with their methods until they could no longer achieve the results previously published. The fraud-squad left satisfied, having completed their mission. Summary statements were made to discredit the research, the uproar died down, and business-as-usual returned to the medical world.

At the same time, neuroimmunologists were conducting similar experiments elsewhere. They found that they could draw the blood of human beings who were directed to remember the happiest moments in their lives. Their labworks showed elevated levels of endorphins, enkephalins, and other healthy neurotransmitters, which were known to enhance immune function. Upon directing these individuals to recall the most traumatic moments in life, their labworks showed blood depressed in the levels of these substances, and blood elevated in cortisol, epinephrine, and other biochemicals known to suppress immune function. No fraud-squad came to their lab to discredit their studies, because their studies didn t challenge the pharmaceutical industry and its authoritative dispensers. People are still free to hold wonderful memories, which may be beneficial for the immune response, according to scientific studies, but it would be foolishness not to add an antibiotic just in case.

I utilize homeopathic formulations whenever possible, because they afford the possibility of helping the individual access its memory regarding successful resolution of an issue. The transamination of amino acids is what allows the body such a quick antibody-production response. It also is required for healthy skin, respiratory and digestive tracts. Folic acid (B9) is converted in the body to tetrahydrofolate, which functions as a base for coenzymes which play major roles in intracellular metabolism. Folic acid can reduce damage to the cell s DNA, and can prevent replication errors. (If you remember, the virus replicates itself by inserting its program into the cell replication factory area, causing a misreading to occur, which results in our bodies replicating lots of virus particles, which then assemble themselves into lots more viruses.) Methylcobalamin (B12) is required for blood cell formation, and for many components of every cell in the body. Included in the foundational nutrition formulas.

While research still has not figured out exactly how these B-complex vitamins promote cellular health, research has figured out that deficiencies of each B-vitamin result in a wide variety of troubles, including immune function.
